What is the ILL Special Interest Group?

The ILL (Interlibrary Loan) SIG (Special Interest Group) is open to Kansas City area and regional library staff members who facilitate interlibrary loan, document delivery, and other resource sharing activities. The ILL SIG has many purposes:

  • to provide a free exchange of ideas and best practices

  • to encourage collegiality and mentorship

  • to provide free and local training opportunities

  • to provide professional development opportunities for library staff

  • to foster collaboration within the local community

Though the ILL SIG is centered and located in the Kansas City metro area, others involved in resource sharing activities from outside the metro area are welcome to attend MALA ILL SIG activities.

What is the ILL SIG Committee?

The ILL SIG Committee is the group that organizes and oversees the activities of the ILL SIG. The ILL SIG Committee has several responsibilities:

  • to organize and schedule events; coordinate with event sites and develop programming; to organize online opportunities for community building, communication, and collaboration (social media, blogs, webinars, etc.)

  • to maintain all documentation regarding the ILL SIG and the Committee

  • to communicate with the ILL SIG, the Kansas City area resource sharing community at large, and other regional resource sharing communities

  • to solicit ideas for training and programming from the ILL SIG and the community

  • to market the ILL SIG’s purposes and services; to deploy outreach activities to area libraries that may be underrepresented or have few opportunities for training and development

Why do I want to participate?

Interlibrary loan is a library service that demands collaboration between libraries. The ILL SIG’s original organizers would like to see the activities of the SIG & Committee result in the following outcomes:

  • A strong sense of local community and camaraderie

  • A chance for library staff to be heard, whether in an exchange of ideas or in a forum for problem solving

  • Improved knowledge about their jobs and about the world of interlibrary loan

  • To provide library staff with useful information they can take back to their libraries and share with their colleagues

  • Mentorship opportunities for new or inexperienced library staff

  • Opportunities for leadership, professional development, collaborating, and networking
